Megaport Enhancing Connectivity in Adelaide

Learn how Megaport’s investment in one of Australia’s fastest-growing economies will transform the connectivity landscape.

Adelaide, Australia is already known for great food, proximity to world-famous wineries, and a laidback lifestyle. But recently there has been an increased focus on business, with South Australia currently the fastest-growing economy of any Aussie state.

That’s why Megaport is currently upgrading its network in Adelaide, set to bring our full solutions suite to the region by the end of the project.

As one of the fastest-growing economies in Australia, our investment will help local businesses and government agencies meet critical connectivity needs as the demand for distributed services grows now and into the future. Here’s how we’re doing it.

Phase One: Core Upgrade (complete)

Phase one of the project is now complete, with our core network infrastructure update finalized. This has increased the local Megaport backbone capacity to 100G and improves availability with the introduction of Port Diversity options in the area.

The growth in demand for network services in the region is underpinned by The South Australian government’s initiative to attract global tech leaders to Adelaide while also encouraging start-ups. Key Megaport cloud partners Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure have all established themselves in Adelaide with NextDC A1 set to become the first Tier IV-certified data center in South Australia. What this means for the region is yet to be seen, but we can speculate that it will lead to greater demand for connectivity.

By increasing capacity and availability, Megaport is prepared for future demand brought on by growth in the market. This ensures Megaport’s network continues to provide high-performing, scalable, and cost-effective connectivity solutions in South Australia as cloud and network demand grows, enabling customers to deploy and manage applications with real-time elasticity and high availability.

Phase Two: Bringing Mega Internet Exchange and Megaport Virtual Edge to Adelaide (in progress)

With Megaport’s core network upgraded, we can now support additional services in Adelaide that were previously only available in other metros. In phase two, MegaIX and Megaport Virtual Edge will come online to support changing networking requirements.

MegaIX will supplement existing local exchanges, further enhancing connectivity options for service providers and enterprises alike. Customers who meet the technical requirements can peer for free from a Megaport in Adelaide.

Internet Exchange provides better efficiency between networks and allows traffic to be exchanged directly, reducing latency and bandwidth usage on client internet connections.

Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) will enable advanced networking functionality, hosted on the Megaport platform, locally in Adelaide. With MVE local businesses can build virtual firewalls, routers, and SD-WAN appliances without the need for physical infrastructure. Customers can use an image from their vendor of choice to complement, expand, or replace existing infrastructure.

By making these solutions available in the Adelaide metro, Megaport customers will get a superior connectivity experience.

Phase Three: Megaport Internet (Coming Soon)

Phase three will bring Megaport Direct Internet Access and Megaport Transit—the latest products added to the Megaport solution portfolio— to Adelaide. Megaport Internet will give customers the ability to provision internet services when and where they need them, with the same flexibility and scalability provided on other services across the platform.

The End Result

South Australian customers will soon have access to all Megaport has to offer, enabling them to build secure, scalable, and agile networks in the data center, at the edge, and into the cloud. We’re excited to support tech leaders and startups, and meet this growing demand in South Australia.
